World’s Third Largest Herbarium

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is expected to dedicate the world third largest herbarium which is located in the Cibinong Science Centre (CSC) today. The herbarium center which was located in an area of 189.6 hectare land was set up as a research center in 1964 by Indonesian first President Soekarno. Development project of the herbarium center which was built on 12,330 square meters was completed on September 27 last year.

“The Herbarium House of Bogoriense is the most complete and oldest herbarium in Southeast Asian region and the world third biggest one,” spokesperson of the Indonesian Institute for Science (LIPI) Murti Martoyo told the Antara News.

Murti said President would also concurrently dedicate a Microbiological Building at the location.

A statement from the Japanese Embassy’s Information and Cultural Office said facility in the two new buildings were built with Japanese grant worth US$18 million.

Indonesia and Japan signed an agreement on the cooperation on July 26, 2004.

The herbarium center has 1,280,000 dried specimens and 50,000 wet ones.
