Wind Power Plant: Nusa Penida, Bali
The absence of technology transfer in setting up the wind-powered plant on Nusa Penida Island, Klungkung regency, has raised fears the plant could not be repaired in the event of an accident.
“We fear officials will not be able to repair the plant if it suddenly breaks down. The problem is, when the plant’s parts were purchased, they did not come with the necessary technology transfer,” Harry Surjadi, executive director of the Society of Indonesian Environment Journalists, told Antara in Denpasar.
Eight parts of the plant’s generator were reportedly set up ahead of a visit by delegates from the recent climate change conference.
“The plant should include transfer of technology, but what happened in Nusa Penida was simply a purchase deal,” he said.
Hira P. Jhamtani, an activist from the Third World Network, also raised a similar issue, urging developing countries to demand transfer of technology from developed countries.
“With the existence of technology transfers, we can fix anything, including the power plant, when it breaks down,” she said.
