The ‘Phinisi’ Schooner
Undoubtedly, it is difficult enough to sail a Phinisi schooner that hails from Tanah Beru, Bulukumba regency, South Sulawesi, around the globe.
The schooner made history with its legendary voyage from Indonesia to Madagascar, southeastern Africa, in the past. A different Phinisi made the journey to Vancouver, Canada, in 1986.
The most surprising thing is that the schooner is made using traditional methods. The only capital that Tanah Beru people have is their long experience and natural skill.
Craftsmen formerly utilized wooden nails to attach wooden panels and assemble the schooners. Today, however, steel bolts replace wooden nails. The vessels are also equipped with a motor to accompany the sails.
Otherwise, the manufacturing process remains much the same as it always was.
