Plans to Replace Bajaj: Jakarta, West Java
The city administration will continue replacing old and rusty bajaj (three-wheeled pedicabs) with eco-friendly models fueled by compressed-natural gas (CNG), Governor Sutiyoso announced.
Sutiyoso said the replacement was aimed at cleaning air and noise pollution from the city.
“We’re still examining the 250 bajaj powered bye CNG in the capital. As the demand for eco-friendly models is high, we will soon provide licences for 4,750 bajaj units,” he told reporters.
The administration launched the first 250 CNG-fueled bajaj last year as part of its project to replace 5,000 bajaj by this year.
There are 14,424 bajaj operating in the capital.
The administration says that of all the vehicles in Jakarta, bajaj produce the worst gas emissions.
The CNG-fueled bajaj cost Rp 36.5 million each.
Sutiyoso conceded he was concerned about the limited supply of CNG to support the project.
“The gas companies are still giving a cool response about supplying CNG to the capital. There are only five stations selling CNG for the bajaj,” he said.
