Indonesia Protects Marine Areas

A vast 900,000 hectares of water are newly protected in the Indonesian archipelago of Raja Ampat. This month, Indonesia’s Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Mr. Freddy Numberi formalized traditional community efforts to safeguard marine life when he announced the creation of a network of seven marine protected areas (MPAs) encompassing the region’s diverse coral reefs, mangrove forests, and other coastal ecosystems.
