Image of the Day: Pasar Ngasem, Yogyakarta, Central Java
Pasar Ngasem is more commonly known as the bird market, and, for obvious reasons!. Outside the entrance on the streets are live birds and cages for sale. But, it is inside the market that is, for sake of a word, surprising. It is a cacophony of alleyways with cage upon cage of birds and animals stacked on top of each other. It’s a smelly place and not one for the faint-hearted. However, it is an interesting place to visit!.

Hi Cathleen C.,
On that, I definitely agree. When I went there for there first time I alomst cried!. It wass so pitiful seeing all those animals and birds in filthy conditions. I remember a fellow trying to see me a fully grown Eagle outside the market!. Candika won’t go inside. She is a sensitive lass!.
Barrie-Thanks for writing & for your photos day after day-I am working two full time jobs right now so rarely have time to comment, although am off for easter week right now. I am saving up of course for the next big trip to paradise, maybe next time we can stay longer than a month. Just want to thank you for giving me the glimpse of Bali & Java whenever I need a “fix” or a little break from what I am doing. Cathleen

The flying foxes were the most heart-wrenching site we saw at that market, we wanted to buy the whole place, there were so many rare & exotic creatures for sale, most seemed fairly well cared for.
