Pasar Kranggan: Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia

Several years ago I visited the local market of Pasar Kranggan, located just north of the Tugu Monument, to do a photo-shoot in black & white.

That time I was alone and unaccompanied by Candika and my reception was, to say the least, unwelcoming. It wasn’t until after taking some discreet photographs and returning home did I realise the vendors were pissed off with me taking fotos whilst they were trying to sell their goods.

This time I played it smart and took Candika with me on the photo-shoot!. The reception was very warm and al the vendors were more than happy to have a chat, and more importantly, their photograph taken.

Pasar Kranggan is one of those markets that oozes colour and the odours of fresh produce.
Such delights as Rambak and Jengkol can be found for sale amidst the myriad of Cabe and other epicurean delights. It is a market that humms along at a steady pace and the ubiquitous becaks are lined up on the opposite side of the street. The becak drivers sometimes take the pace a little too slow for them and have a nap!.

Pasar Kranggan is not unlike any other local market in the archipelago but it does have that something alluring about it.
