Megawati to Run for President 2009?

Secretary General of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Pramono Agung said the party`s general chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri has yet to decide whether or not to run for the presidency in the 2009 general elections, but for the sake of the party, Megawati should take part in the presidential race.

“I don`t want to predict on her decision, but to keep the party solid Megawati should nominate herself,” Pramono Anung said here Friday as the article in the Antara News explains.

PDI-P keeps on consolidation itself, Pramono said, adding that in the party`s second national working meeting and its national coordination meeting to be held in Jakarta from September 8-10, Megawati is expected to make up her mind.

Pramono said further that in the party`s national conference in the resort island of Bali last January, the party members nominated Megawati as presidential candidate in the 2009 elections, but Megawati still has yet to give an answer.

According to him, the so many branches of the party in the regions hoping Megawati to join the presidential race, was quite a surprise, that she could not give an answer right away.

“Megawati`s nomination for the presidential election was actually not in the agenda of the meeting, the subject merely came from the branches themselves,” Pramono said.

On the occasion Pramono also asked for Megawati`s readiness to run for the presidency, considering that the party is now very solid.
