Bule Situations: Yellow Things

The Mad Max of the Kuta highways, that intrepid traveller Sara Bradbury, tells us of a meeting with ‘yellow things’ that keep appearing!.

I was staying in Bounty Hotel in Kuta with my brother Danny, and four other mates.

It was a beautiful sunny day in Kuta Bali and all of us were thinking of something to do. Someone came up with the great idea of hiring some motorbikes!. So we went and found our little local friend Ari, hired a motorbike each (30,000rph per day + insurance) and off we went!!. Ari in the lead of course because I’m not sure about you but all the streets in Kuta and around Bali all look the bloody same to me!. So it was good we had our local friend to guide us…..

saraari.jpg

He took us for a good 20-30 minute ride which was very interesting!. Sometimes feeling a little scared and unsure of what’s going to happen next, other times just enjoying the ride and hooning along the highway at around 90km!!. The thing that worried me the most was the fact that we are doing this while wearing a dodgy helmet that was loose as, singlet tops, boardies and bloody thongs!. You’ve gotta have a laugh at the situation though, I don’t think you would get away with that anywhere in OZ!!. Its also funny how those large yellow trucks drive right by you too, you feel as though they are just going to run right into you, they never do though…….well that’s what I’ve heard anyway……

saranbro.jpg

So we ended up at this beautiful beach at Nusa Dua!. Wow so nice, and the water was so clear!. Just beautiful. After a couple of hours of swimming and just relaxing we decided to get back on the bikes and hoon on back to Kuta…I think it was beer-o’clock so the boys were keen to get back!. Off we went with Ari still in the lead, in and out of cars and trucks just cruising through when we come to a bit of a traffic jam, ah well its all part of driving or riding in Bali right. As we were only going about 10km we could sort of talk to each other and just slowly cruise along, well my brother Danny was just so in the moment of it all and was yelling out to one of our mates ” Hey Robby, Robby how ya goin, look at me whoo hoo!”

sara1.jpg

Now Robby was on the left of him, which means Danny’s head was facing left and the bright yellow truck that was beeping at him for about 2 minutes already was on his right of him!!!!. So Danny’s exciting moment became not so exciting when the yellow truck couldn’t beep no more and ran into Danny and knocked him off his bike!!. Danny was to middle left of the truck and the truck just sort of merged into Danny. He fell to his side and the bike fell on him and if the truck had of kept moving so would have the wheel, but he was quick to get up and luckily he just had some grazes on his knee and arm. The truck driver stopped and got out, he was ever so sorry and wanted to help but there wasn’t much he could do. We all just pulled over to the side as Danny was a bit shaken but still in good spirits, and, good enough to ride home. It scared the absolute shit out of me as I was just behind him when it happened, and it all happened so fast!

We all rode back to the hotel and after telling him how silly he is and then patching him up it was all good, and after about 2 or 3 hours was when it became funny and we could laugh about it, but still thinking of that moment is a little disturbing sometimes!. Ok, so Bali lesson number two for Danny: While riding motor bikes in the streets of Bali, always look out for those BLOODY YELLOW TRUCKS!!!!. You can’t miss em! They are bright yellow!. Oh and stop talking shit while trying to ride a motorbike, just ride the damn thing!!!.

And if you want to know about lesson number one………. stay tuned!

Hey Sara you are very brave girl getting on one of those bikes in Kuta, there is no way I would do it they drive worse over there than what people on the Perth roads do.

Hey Nat

I dont know about Perth but Balinese drivers are way better than Sydney drivers! I actually felt safe while riding, its just my brother is such a clutz! If you drive safely and are aware I think its fine. I had fun anyway! he he he

As for the Bounty I thought it was pretty good and yes a good party Hotel but I really enjoy staying at Troppo Zone! Always a party happening there and the staff are awsome and so funny! I reckon Troppo is a little bit more casual aswell. You should stay there next time, you will love it!!

First up, funny story Sara and I enjoyed the laugh but not at your bro because I’ve done that a few times. Last time I broke my arm. Well, actually a car bumper did that for me!. Girls, why don’t you cruise over to Sanur. There are some great places there and its a good party scene. Don’t worry about the snobby self-righteous shits that stay over that side!.
