Bule Situations: ‘Troppo Waltzing’ - Sara Bradbury

One exciting night at Troppo Zone, all the guests were doing the usual and having as many cheap drinks as they can before heading out, and also enjoying the band that was playing at the bar. Being happy hour and all (15,000rp for 1 vodka lemonade) well you have to make the most of it don’t you….. drink after drink after drink, everyone is starting to get a bit rowdy, singing along with the band and they even had an extra mic for anyone who was game enough to sing…. well that’s where our good mate Tony comes in!.

After a few Cold Chisel and ACDC songs he decides he wants to get up on stage, kick the band off and sing the national anthem!! (he certainly made the most of happy hour). Now that is all well and good, if you know the words!. Poor old Tony gets up so confident and starts off “Australians all let us rejoice, let us rejoice….um let us rejoice…. hang on”, as he whispers into the mic, “Sara, what’s the words again, please”. Now by this time everyone that was there watching was in hysterics!!!. I couldn’t even help the poor bloke as the laughter took over!!!!!. All good, though he stepped down with confidence, we all gave him a cheer and a clap and that was it….. until, he wanted to give it another shot!.

By this time the band was finished and it DJ time!. He ran through the words of Waltzing Matilda with me just so he was sure he wouldn’t stuff this one up. So he grabs the mic, ” DJ STOP!!! IVE GOT ANOTHER SONG!”, and with a little encouragement from the crowd the DJ stops the music, and give it up for Tony. “Waltzing Matilda, waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda, waltzing…ahh what’s those words again” he looked like a little kid on stage so innocent and frightened but oh man I don’t think me or anyone at that moment had laughed so hard!!. He just looked and sounded hilarious!!!!. About half an hour later he comes up to the group and says “I can’t believe I forgot the worlds to my own national anthem!. What a dick head!!!” He was slightly embarrassed.

The DJ ended up putting the music back on but the laughs continued for a while after, and luckily Tony had a good sense of humour!. Next morning at breakfast Tony was a lot quieter but was determined to prove he knew the words to his own anthem…

Happy hour sure is happy in Bali!!

The photo is of Tony and myself before happy hour kicked in!! When we actually looked respectable! I was going to post some of the photos of Tony singing but I don’t want to embarrass him too much, I think the story was enough.

Fabulous and very funny Sara. I enjoyed this immensely. Trying to remember one’s anthem can be difficult unless you are a patriot.

Hey Guys thanks so much for the wonderful comments, I am so happy you all love the story! Hey Nat I want to hear your story about getting pissed in Kuta!! And to Simon, Waltzing Matilda is Australia’s best known national song. You could say its like an unofficial national anthem. Im sure most of you can remember singing it in assembely at primary school!

Anyway I have plenty more Bali stories that I would love to share with you all so untill then

Bye for now…
