Bule Situations: Birthday Girl

Here it is, that drunken night of Natalie’s in Kuta. Exceptional as she is as an adventurer, there are certain navigational skills Natalie Gamble she lacks. Hey, I’ll let you be the judge.

Happy Birthday to Me

One my last night in Bali my two sisters, the one I was travelling with Selina and my other sister Debbie went out for drinks before Selina and I came home.

I used the excuse that because it was my birthday 3 days later and Debbie was staying in Bali for another 3 weeks she had to come and have some birthday drinks with me. So we headed to Goes Art Bar on Jl Legian. Now we were over there two weeks after the bombings and let me say the place was very quite.

We were 3 of about 10 people in the bar at the time, so the staff were very friendly and joined us for a chat and drinks, and in the end, a very strange sing along. They had a CD of reggae music that I had not heard in a very long time and I was trying very hard to get the manager of the bar to give me the CD.

The deadly drinks menu

His reply to my request was not one that I wanted. I could have the CD as long as I sang a couple of songs and there was no way I was going to do this sober so the drinks were coming thick and fast and I felt like a fish, I was only just finishing one drink and the next one was in front of me.

Nat, red-faced and drinking hard

After 3 hours and a bus load of Porno Bikinis and Bali Moon cocktails under my belt, I started singing for that bloody CD and Debbie was getting all the embarrassing photos of me being a drunken twit. I had a great time trying to sing the songs as I kept on losing my place in the song lyrics book. I was laughing that much and I sounded like a dieing chook, but my back-up band (the guys that work at the bar and sing songs) were totally great. I think the only song that I did manage to sing was the song from the TV show Lamb Chop and the first verse of Once a Jolly Swag Man and I even managed to stuff that one up too.

After 5 hours, 450,000rph worth of drinks and my head spinning faster than one of those sideshow rides I got that bloody CD!. So, I thought that it was time to head off home and so I said good night to Debbie and Selina and I headed back to the hotel with a sway this way and a stagger that way down Poppies 2 I went, all the while trying to keep my stomach contents in place and remembering that damn pothole that got me the day before. I saw it coming up but the sway turned into a stagger and down the pothole I went with a stumble but the true lady that I am (NOT) I stopped myself from making a total ass of myself, laughed if off and made it home.

Hi Julie,

Debbie and I am hoping to be back in Bali by September if all things go to plan and this trip is only for shopping, drinking more shopping and more drinking. If you know what I mean.

Nat, this is a very funny tale and one that I could associate with in my youth. Being middle-aged I tend to drink healthy prefering champers!.
