Whirlwinds Hit Bali: Karangasem, Bali, Indonesia
One person was killed and one temple and three houses were damaged by falling trees when whirlwind hit the resort island of Bali early this week according to a report in the Antara News.
Ni Made Repin (35), a resident of Banjar Nangka, Bebandem, Karangasem District, Bali Island, was killed when big coconut trees fell on top of his house and two next-door houses last Monday.
In Buleleng District, a temple was damaged as a banyan tree fell on it when very strong wind struck the area.
The weather in Bali was forecasted to be bad until two or three days to come, Sutrisno, spokesman of the Denpasar meteorology and geophysics office, said here on Wednesday.
In Denpasar, capital of Bali province, very strong wind from western and southwestern directions at a speed of up to 50 km per hour caused a number of trees to fall on. Two cars were damaged as trees fell on top of them.
Whirlwind also hit West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) provinces.
Warning information concerning the weather forecast has been disseminated to a number of seaports and airports in Bali, East Java, NTB, and NTT, he said.
In Mataram, strong wind of 35 knots per hour and downpours hit the capital of NTB in the wee hours of Wednesday, causing a panic to the local people.
Mataram meteorology and geophysics officer Joko S. explained that the normal speed of the wind was 25 knots per hour.
Strong wind usually hits Mataram annually, and the local people called it “Chinese New Year” wind.
