Indonesians in Focus: Kartika Affandi

kartika-affandi.jpg Recent celebrations in Yogyakarta marked 100 years since the death of the Indonesian art icon, Affandi. The beloved painter died in 1990, at 83. The inheritor of his talent and keeper of his legend is his 72?-year-old daughter, Kartika, who started making portraits of him about five years before.

borobudur-yk.jpg There is no doubt that the beauty, glory, and magnificence of the world heritage site, Borobudur temple, is well known not just across Indonesia but also around the globe. Yet, little may be known about the surrounding areas that are no less interesting destinations and can be enjoyed while visiting Borobudur — the largest Buddhist temple in the world built around the 7th and 8th centuries, located some 60 kilometers north of Yogyakarta.

Buddhists Perform Waisak Ceremonies: Central Java

Handicraft Industry Makes a Comeback: Yogyakarta, Central Java

Amid all the destruction and loss of life caused by last year’s Java earthquake, one often overlooked casualty was Yogyakarta’s handicraft industry. But a year after the May 27 quake, which devastated Yogyakarta and parts of Central Java, the industry is beginning to bounce back.

Plawangan Turgo is a great place for a morning’s hike along the jungle paths and affords excellent views of flora and fauna, especially the mischievous monkeys. Located not far from Kaliurang and at the rear of Telogo Putri, you can combine the whole area in a day’s visit.

There are many shopping malls in Yogyakarta city but none that are in the dead centre of town except of course for the Ramai Mall. Malioboro Mall offers everything for all manner of shoppers, and, has some excellent restorans. Opening at 10am and closing at 9pm, it is a hive of activity all the day ad night.

When you visit Yogyakarta in Central Java, it is a great idea to go up into the mountains near Gunung Merapi and the area around Kaliurang. The cool and fresh atmosphere is invigorating. Not far from Kaliurang is Telogo Putri. There are markets, a monkey forest, a very cold swimming pool and not far from there, there are excellent views of Gunung Merapi.

Candika and I were at Telogo Putri not far from Kaliurang and hunger became the better of us and the warung we went to had an excellent choice. Trouble is, you tend to want it all!.

The beautiful mountain retreat of Telogo Putri, not far from Yogyakarta in Central Java, is stunning to say the least. I was up there not so long ago and whilst relaxing and sipping on an iced tea, I noticed the sunlight playing with colour on some items in the place.

Housewives Cooperatives: Cebongan, Yogyakarta, Central Java

housewives.jpg A group of housewives gather in the living room of a residence in Cebongan village, Sleman regency, some of them displaying a variety of merchandise in front of them. Among these products are foods, herbal medicines, consumer goods and clothing. While some women seen involved in a serious discussion, others were conducting business transactions with each other. Another group of women were engaged in similar activities in the guest room of the house.
