Charms of Yogyakarta: Central Java
It’s easy to fall in love with Yogyakarta; not so easy to explain how it is that the city so beguiles and enthralls the visitor. To walk in Jogja, as it is fondly called — and part of the city’s charm is that it invites you to do just that — is to be taken by surprise in a hundred tiny, enigmatic ways.
‘Geblok’ - A Tawangmangu Specialty: Karanganyar, Central Java
A tour through the Tawangmangu forest reserve in Karanganyar, Central Java, will not be complete without savoring the favorite dish of the Lawu slope, nasi geblok, which is only found at Tawangmangu Market, about a kilometer from the tourist spot.
Bella Vita Restaurant: Yogyakarta, Central Java
Finally, it has arrived: Yogyakarta’s first Italian restaurant. Many lovers of pizza and pasta had been waiting long for the time when this gastronomic lack in the Java tourism capital would be filled.
Snake Business: Yogyakarta, Central Java
The words “great snakeman” from Timbulharjo village, Central Java accidentally reached me in Yogyakarta. The evening cool had just fallen over the busy middle-sized town. The perfect time to go out for dinner at a warung (side walk eatery) I had passed by so often already but never sat down at.
Bull Noodles All the Rage: Trimurti, Central Java
A bull, a giant mixer and loads of sunshine are the noodle recipe of choice for an Indonesian family that has discarded machines for this traditional, and time-consuming, process.
Image of the Day: Malioboro Mall, Yogyakarta, Central Java
There are many shopping malls in Yogyakarta city but none that are in the dead centre of town except of course for the Ramai Mall. Malioboro Mall offers everything for all manner of shoppers, and, has some excellent restorans. Opening at 10am and closing at 9pm, it is a hive of activity all the day ad night.
Image of the Day: Telogo Putri, Central Java
When you visit Yogyakarta in Central Java, it is a great idea to go up into the mountains near Gunung Merapi and the area around Kaliurang. The cool and fresh atmosphere is invigorating. Not far from Kaliurang is Telogo Putri. There are markets, a monkey forest, a very cold swimming pool and not far from there, there are excellent views of Gunung Merapi.
Image of the Day: Kaki Lima, Yogyakarta, Central Java
When you are travelling in Indonesia and want to sample authentic Indonesian food, then hit the streets!. By far the best food and cheaper than warungs and restorans.
Image of the Day: Tukang Becak, Yogyakarta, Central Java
Becaks are by far the best way to get around town. They are cheap and in general the drivers friendly. But when the heat of the midday sun gets a little bit harsh, then it’s time for a siesta!.
Image of the Day: Boyong Kalegan, Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia
When it comes to seafood then I am first at the table, but, when it comes to traditional Javanese seafood, then the table and all served upon is mine!. Only kidding. Candika and I went to a delightful seafood restoran not far from Yogyakarta called Boyong Kalegan.
