kartika-affandi.jpg Recent celebrations in Yogyakarta marked 100 years since the death of the Indonesian art icon, Affandi. The beloved painter died in 1990, at 83. The inheritor of his talent and keeper of his legend is his 72?-year-old daughter, Kartika, who started making portraits of him about five years before.

Yet, little may be known about the surrounding areas that are no less interesting destinations and can be enjoyed while visiting Borobudur — the largest Buddhist temple in the world built around the 7th and 8th centuries, located some 60 kilometers north of Yogyakarta.

For 80-year-old Atmo Rejo, the combined charisma of Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono and Deputy Governor Pakualam is a characteristic of Yogyakarta that must be appreciated and preserved. He said he was willing to sacrifice himself in defending this feature of the kingdom.

Walk around any part of Yogyakarta in Central Java and you will find some amazing buildings. Some are historical and dating from the Dutch Occupation of Indonesia, others are delightful old buildings and some converted into small businesses. This delightful building was converted into a hairdresser salon (potong rambut).

The world-famous and heritage-listed Borobudur Buddhist temple was over the weekend the subject of much discourse as experts argued around how best to preserve and maintain not just the temple building — but everything it represents, including religious expression, cultural heritage and art history.

Tugu Monument: Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia

Like a centennial it stands at the crossroads of Jl Mangkubumi, Jl Diponoegoro, Jl Jend Sudirman and Jl AM Sangaji. It is the first major monument you see in Yogyakarta as you drive into town from the airport or from the north or west.
