Marine Conservation Cuts Poverty

The study, Nature’s Investment Bank, which was released by The Nature Conservancy in Manado, North Sulawesi, on Thursday, was based on more than 1,100 interviews within poor communities in four countries, including Indonesia, from November 2006 to May this year.
Lampung Finds Solution to Forest Conservation

Since 2000, 6,537 households near Rigil hill and Tangkit Tebak forest in West Lampung municipality have taken part in the “Forest Community” program, regreening the 12-hectare forest which was damaged by illegal logging.

The ranking was based on visitor experiences.
Traditional Art Form: Yogyakarta, Central Java

Pucung village in Bantul regency, Yogyakarta, is one of the places in the country in which its crafts is made from animal skin. The craftsmen have learned their skills from their parents, so it’s a generational practice despite their meagre amount of income. A mother of two, Sartina, 26, has known the craft of creating shadow puppet skin since she was in fourth grade. After she is finished with her household chore, she paints on pieces of skin to be used for fan souvenirs (kipas). Most of the craftsmen in Pucung village are daily laborers in which businessmen, who purchase the raw material, use their service for the finishing part, such as cutting and painting.
Rare Local Trees get a Good Home: Bogor, West Java
By Barrie | No Comments » The Indonesian National Park Foundation together with Cibodas National Park has designated a plot of land in Cibodas for different species of trees representing areas of Jakarta. The foundation’s researcher, Holif Imamudin, who is also the former director of Bogor National Park, said the planned park was part of a conservation effort to protect trees already considered rare. The park now has 1,500 seedlings comprising 22 different tree species.
Becoming a ‘Greener’ Traveler

Saraswati: Bali
By Barrie | No Comments » Today is Saraswati in Bali. This is the special day of thanks for the gift of knowledge. The festive day is a time for making offerings to books and especially the sacred lontar palm leaf books. All books are subjects on this day. One is not supposed to read books, however schools have special ceremonies. Notedly, Pura Jagatnatha in Denpasar is jam packed with students praying for success in their studies in the early morning ceremony.
