Bali Governor Dewa Beratha has given a green light to state-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura I to expand the busy Ngurah Rai airport to cope with growing numbers of visitors to Bali. But it’s no guarantee the plan will come off easily — especially in view of the inevitable environmental and social consequences.

End Tourist Extortion in Bali

The Bali Tourism Board (BTB) urged the government to take serious action to eliminate the extortion of foreign tourists, especially by the immigration service, saying the practice had long undermined the island’s sensitive tourism industry.

Mandala Air Expands Routes: Bali

Adam Air Picking Up After Slump

Lombok International Airport to open in 2010

PT Angkasa Pura I is targeting to commence operations of a new international airport in Lombok, Bali’s near neighbor to the east, by 2010. To be built at an estimated cost of Rp. 665 billion (approximately US$72.3 million), the new airport for Lombok will be located in the central province of that island as Bali Discovery explains.

Ngurah Rai International Airport Unsatisfactory: Bali

A survey conducted by the Indonesian Consumer Council Foundation (YLKI) of Jakarta and the Consumers Protection Bureau (LPK) in Bali reveals that 72.5% of the people who use Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport are unsatisfied with the level of service provided by Island’s sole airport.

Shortage of Flights Threaten Bali Tourism

As a record total of foreign tourists visit Bali, the number of Australians holidaying there is also gradually improving. But the Balinese tourism industry says it’s not just the recent bird flu deaths that are the biggest hurdle to full recovery. Hoteliers and tourists say the main problem is the lack of seat availability on flights, particularly between Bali and the east coast of Australia.
