Taman Sari is a part of the Kraton, or Sultan’s Palace, in Yogyakarta. It is a definite ‘must see’ if you are visiting this cultural city. The best times to go are early in the morning and late afternoon when the light is excellent for photography. At both times you will at least avoid the tourist buses that daily fill the carparks.

Sangiran Museum: Sragen, Central Java

A student group entered Sangiran Museum in Sragen, Central Java, and enthusiastically looked at the various fossils on display, which date back from hundreds of thousands to millions of years ago. All of the fossils are kept in 15 vitrines at the museum, which is also called the Conservation Center of Early Man Site.

Prambanan Restoration to Begin: Yogyakarta, Central Java

Post-earthquake restoration of the famous heritage Hindu Prambanan Temple on the borderline of Yogyakarta and Central Java provinces should start this month, thanks to funding from Saudi Arabia.

East Java Cave Depicts Buddha’s Journey: Jireg, East Java

jireg-bondowoso.jpg The road running along the hill in Jireg village, Bondowoso, East Java, is deserted. Once in a while, a motorbike breaks the silence. In this arid and rocky area far from the noise of the island’s cities, is a cave containing what could be some of the most important carvings in Indonesia.

Preserving Borobudur’s Legacy: Yogyakarta, Central Java

The world-famous and heritage-listed Borobudur Buddhist temple was over the weekend the subject of much discourse as experts argued around how best to preserve and maintain not just the temple building — but everything it represents, including religious expression, cultural heritage and art history.
