Tojo Una-Una Relies on Togean Islands: Central Sulawesi
Strategically located in the heart of Tomini Bay, Tojo Una-Una regency in Central Sulawesi is rich in marine and tourism potential. In this regency, which was first established on Dec. 18, 2003, one can find at least 56 large and small islands known as the Togean Islands, which stretch for some 90 kilometers.
Tana Toraja: South Sulawesi
The straps of my backpack cut into my shoulders and my legs ached as I struggled up the last steep rise through the pine trees.
Ahead of me lay another two days of walking along 50 kilometers of mountain track, and I began to wonder if this was a good idea. As the ground levelled and a cooling breeze ran in, a heartening view opened in both directions.
Neglected Prehistoric Remains: Central Sulawesi
Famed for its flora and fauna, Lore Lindu National Park in Central Sulawesi is also home to prehistoric remains. Many megalithic statues, which, according to research, are estimated to be 2,000 years old, can be found in the park which spans as far as the eye can see.
Japanese Fort Discovered: Banggai, Central Sulawesi
Residents in Kampangar village, Balantak district in Banggai regency have found a fort and ammunition believed to be remnants from the Japanese occupation period. The site is 650 km from the provincial capital of Palu and contains several furnaces, a water tank and a large 20-meter deep pit at the foot of the hill.
Palu Beaches: Central Sulawesi
Rising from its image as a conflict-torn city, Central Sulawesi’s capital Palu has begun to bounce back, relying on its beachy charm to boost tourism. Talise beach in the heart of the city was known back in 1990s as a place for sex, as evidenced by the long lines of motorcycles and cars that packed the beach each night.
Guardian of the Forests
On the back of her bio alone, it’s tempting to think of Lynn Clayton as something of an eccentric. The British zoologist has spent the better part of 15 years living in a remote camp in the rainforests of northern Sulawesi. Lynn, who first came to Sulawesi as an undergraduate at prestigious Oxford University, has devoted her time to the study and preservation of a species little heard of overseas and little appreciated in this country: the babirusa, Sulawesi’s “pig-deer”.
Indonesians in Focus: Said Tolao
It was around 6:00 a.m. and most residents of Ngata Toro in Donggala regency, Central Sulawesi, were sitting outside their houses in sarongs. The air was actually a little cold that morning, with thick fog blanketing the village.
