In Indonesia kue-kue, sweet or savory snacks, are a familiar sight, found everywhere from food markets to star-studded events and grand weddings. However, during colonial times, kue-kue were not considered appropriate food for well-heeled individuals and it appeared only in traditional circles.

It was early morning and the grass was still wet with dew. An elderly man was walking home to his village. The deep wrinkles on his face betrayed his age of almost 72, as he revealed later.
Enthusiastic and agile, the grandfather of 14 was hospitable when he spoke early last month. To reach his house, we had to trek for some five kilometers, including wading across a quickly moving river.

Tempeh in Indonesia

Wherever you go in Indonesia, you will almost always be able to find some variety of tempe. There is, among others, tempe gembus, which is made from the sediment left over from the tofu-making process, and tempe benguk, made from the benguk bean. But the most popular and well known tempe is that made from soybeans as gastronome and epicurean el supremo Suryatini N. Ganie explains.

Muslims Must Agree to Determine Islamic Calendar

Habitat of Endangered Maleo Bird Shrinking: Luwuk, Central Sulawesi

The habitat of the endangered macrocephalon maleo (maleo bird) in Banggai district has been reduced to 625 hectares of the 12,500 ha wildlife reserve set by the Forest Ministry in 1982, an official said.
