Indonesia’s Pluralism Skeptics

Many people say that Indonesia is a plural nation with a Muslim majority. Hardly anyone would deny the current plurality of ethnicity, languages, and religions in Indonesia. A recent interfaith group said they viewed pluralism as the nation’s social capital, which should be revitalized and developed, thereby helping the Republic of Indonesia grow strong and prosper.

The Many Faces of Poverty in Indonesia

Intuition many hold that pluralism in society is a destabilizing factor for democracy. There seems to be only so much diversity a society can handle. Many Indonesians fear that ethnic, linguistic, cultural and religious plurality could cause disintegration or even “balkanization”.

A Secular State for a Better Muslim Society

Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na’im, a noted scholar of Islam and human rights from Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, the U.S. state of Georgia, will launch the Indonesian version of his new book, Islam and Secular State: Negotiating the Future of Sharia, on Thursday in Jakarta. Prior to the book launch hosted by the Center for the Study of Religion and Culture (CSRC), he spoke with The Jakarta Post’s Muhammad Nafik about the moderate Islam he has been campaigning for.

Aboru Villagers Face Stigma: Central Maluku

aboru.jpg Aboru village in Maluku has a reputation as a center for separatist leanings in the province. The 3,000 or so residents of Aboru, located in the south of Haruku Island, in Central Maluku regency, have often found themselves isolated as a result of this reputation.

The presidential election is still two years away, but political intrigues among the country’s elites have already begun. In March, for example, chairman of Muhammadiyah, Din Syamsuddin, was reportedly involved in the establishment of Baitul Muslimin, an Islamic-oriented economic wing of the nationalist Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).
