Orangutans Flee Illegal Loggers in Indonesian Parks

orang_utan.jpg Indonesia’s efforts to crack down on illegal logging are holding out some hope for endangered oranguntans, the red-haired apes that inhabit the Indonesian rainforest, the UN Environment Programme says. But hundreds of orangutans have fled their homes and ended up in “refugee” camps as illegal logging rapidly destroys the last remaining rainforests of Southeast Asia.

Climate Change Affecting Bogor Botanical Gardens: Bogor, West Java

Manifestations of climate change in Indonesia like long and unpredictable droughts have affected old plants in Bogor`s Botanical Garden. Bogor Botanical Garden office had proposed to Bogor city authorities that plant conservation efforts not be concentrated in the garden only, and that plants nursed in the garden be further cultivated elsewhere, like in an ecopark at the Cibinong Science Center.

Govt to Relocate Aceh Victims from Leuser National Park: Sumatra

A green group is urging thousands of displaced people from Aceh be moved away from Gunung Leuser National Park in Langkat regency, North Sumatra, to prevent the environmental destruction of the protected park. Leuser International Foundation, a non-governmental organization, warns the people, who have been living within the park for at least 10 years, after being displaced from their homes by conflicts, threaten the sustainability of the park.

Orangutans Protection Needs Government Policy

oeang5.jpg Research has revealed that the Kalimantan orangutan population is estimated at about 50,000 in the wild, while the Sumatran population is estimated at only around 7000 individuals living on the border of Aceh and North Sumatra. Malaysia regards this animal as precious and is promoting it as an official state animal of Sabah as Didy Wurjanto writes in The Opinion.

Reduction in Rhino Poaching: Bandar Lampung, Sumatra, Indonesia

The poaching of any living species is not only disgusting, it is repugnant. I was pleased to read that the poaching of Rhino’s in the Way Kambas National Park, Sumatra, has dropped significantly.
