‘People’s Pharmacies’: Indonesia

The government has come closer to providing affordable drugs for the public by establishing the Apotek Rakyat (People’s Pharmacy) program to enable people to procure inexpensive over-the-counter and prescribed drugs. The People’s Pharmacy is based on a ministerial decree enacted in March 2007.

Ancient Theater Kept Alive: Jakarta, West Java

wayang.jpg The lights went out inside the Bharata Wayang Orang Theater in Senen, Central Jakarta. The dim sound of the traditional gamelan orchestra gained in intensity, silencing the chatter of the audience. The dark maroon curtain lifted to reveal performers in colorful traditional costumes. The show had begun.

Nurturing ‘Future Writers’: Indonesia

Record-Breaking Poetry Reading: Semarang, Central Java

More than 170 people, including 21 lecturers and five employees of the Semarang-based Soegijapranata Catholic University, are taking part in a 75-hour English poetry reading session, aimed at breaking an Indonesian Record Museum (Muri) record.

Textile Industry in Trouble: Central Java

Illegal textile imports and dilapidated equipment have put Central Java’s textile industry at risk of losing out to the competition. Head of the Indonesian Textile Association in Central Java, Joko Santoso, said old machinery has slowed production, and that illegal garments entering the country were now meeting around 55 percent of national demand.

Reviving a City: Semarang, Central Java

emmanuel-church.jpg Once upon a time, when Indonesia was still ruled by the Dutch, Semarang, the capital of Central Java, was host to an event of international standards. In 1914 and long before the country gained independence, the city showcased artworks from all over the globe, comprising carvings, silverware, bronze statues, gold jewelry and handicrafts.
