Puspiptek Not Threatening According to Locals
In Indonesia, the development of nuclear energy is often viewed as a frightening concept. However, residents who live in close proximity to the Research Center of Science and Technology (Puspitek) in Serpong, Tangerang, go about their daily lives with little fuss. The center is home to a nuclear laboratory in which various studies are conducted for industrial and scientific purposes.
Revenge of the Teak Forests
Can Mother Nature take revenge for the way humans have been treating her? Obviously not directly. The torrential rains of the last two weeks have claimed 65 lives in the regency of Karanganyar, on the slopes of Central Java’s Mount Lawu. The resulting floods and landslides have caused property damage and disrupted transportation in at least 35 regencies and municipalities in Central and East Java, as well as the Yogyakarta regencies of Bantul and Sleman.
Clean water a Basic Necessity
The government says extreme weather events are a serious threat to water security. During the wet season floods large swaths of the country, including Jakarta, are inundated by floods. At other times droughts cause drinking water shortages for millions. Below is the final article in a series of six on climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Indonesians in Focus: Johan Budi Sava
“Where was Bung Karno born?” a bookshop attendant asked, referring to the country’s founding father, Sukarno. “Blitar, East Java,” his customer confidently replied, recalling what he had read in textbooks. He was born in Surabaya. He mentioned it in his speech at the University of Pajajaran, Bandung, in the 1960s,” said the attendant of Toga Mas bookshop in Malang, East Java.
Indonesians in Focus: Soetadi Prawiro
Described plainly in terms of his wrinkles and gray hair, Soetadi Prawiro, 75, does not sound like an activist. Yet he has always stood firm in the face of opposition to his campaign to protect the forest and beaches of Wediombo in Gunungkidul regency.
Tree Planting Mandatory in Action Plan
The government has released a report on a plan of action covering the mitigation and adaptation efforts for climate change. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono officially launched the report during the recent climate conference in Bali. The plan of action on mitigation and adaptation covers the forestry, energy, agriculture, water resources, infrastructure and health sectors. Below is the first article focusing on the forestry sector.
Indonesians in Focus: Mudji Sutrisno
Mudji Sutrisno often speaks of the three life-changing moments in his life. Twenty five years ago, on Dec. 30, 1982, to be exact, Mudji, who was at that time a cultural activist, was ordained as a Catholic priest in Yogyakarta. The first of the three events was in 2003. Mudji had been asked to marry a couple in Wonogiri, Central Java. The couple, who were quite poor, asked whether they needed to rent special clothes for the church ceremony. “We have nothing, Father. We only have our love,” they said.
The REDD Project
Indonesia’s much-anticipated REDD program — a pilot forest project to help tackle climate change — is set to be launched Thursday in Bali by the republic’s Forest Minister MS Kaban, but he said it was still unclear how exactly the project would work. REDD details mechanisms for incentives, loans and finance, but Kaban said no plans had been devised yet to measure a country’s contribution to reducing deforestation.
Animal Shelters Near Collapse
A noted conservationist has urged the government to take over the operation of seven Animal Rescue Centers (PPS) across the country, saying they are on the brink of financial collapse. “Most of these centers can’t even generate enough money to feed the animals. Some haven’t been able to pay the salaries of their employees for quite some time,” Rosek Nursahid said at PPS Petungsewu in Malang, East Java.
Indonesians in Focus: Untung Wiyono
“There are always risks with agricultural chemicals. They can poison you and cause poor soil fertility,” Sragen Regent Untung Wiyono has been known to say in convincing others to adopt organic farming practices. The regent, who has been promoting organic agriculture since he was elected in 2001, said fertility was restored to the land around Sragen after farmers committed to working in harmony with the environment.
