Indonesians in Focus: Ahmad Syubbanuddin Alwy
One Sunday afternoon, a man dressed as Gatotkaca, the solidly built hero of the Mahabaratha epic, stood in the yard of the Rasarantang Arts Center in Cirebon, West Java. Before him were some 20 people wearing costumes of various kinds. They raised the national flag, recited the state ideology of Pancasila, sang the national anthem Indonesia Raya and read poems.
Indonesians in Focus: Mardiyem
In a two-by-five-meter room in a house in Suryomentaraman, Ngampilan, Yogyakarta, an elderly woman lies helplessly on the carpet. The physical strength Mardiyem, 78, displayed when fighting for the rights of the more than 1,000 Indonesian women who were forced to become jugun ianfu (comfort women) for the Japanese Imperialist Army, left her long ago.
Indonesians in Focus: Agus Susilo Hadi
Agus Susilo Hadi is of medium height and build, with a distinctive moustache and a quiet disposition. He rarely gets hassled by anything. His name gives away the fact that he is not originally from Tolongano in South Banawa, Donggala — around 62 kilometers west of Palu, Central Sulawesi — the place where he lives.
Indonesians in Focus: Nurhasanah and Marlina
Ask any Jakarta resident and the chances are they will know what pempek Palembang is. It is a special delicacy from Palembang, South Sumatra, made from fish and sago. Considered an essential dish for Palembang people, pempek is known for its unique dark vinegary sauce and contrasting flavors. Like any other traditional dish across the country, pempek has become a commodity. Most likely tourists who visit Palembang will bring home pempek as a gift for their friends and family.

Indonesians in Focus: Achmad Mikami Sumawijaya
“I have built a cultural village to encourage people to participate in the seren taun (harvest festival). I hope that young people from the Land of Sunda (West Java province), particularly Bogor, learn to love Sundanese culture. I feel concerned by the fact that Sundanese culture is now being eroded by foreign cultures,” said Achmad Mikami Sumawijaya.
Indonesians in Focus: Marusya Nainggolan
Amid her tight schedule for the ongoing 6th Schouwburg Festival, which runs through Sept. 28, Gedung Kesenian Jakarta (GKJ) director Marusya Nainggolan welcomed The Jakarta Post to her modest office, contained within an old house next to the main building.
Indonesians in Focus: Didit Hari Purnomo
While most people try to chase happiness in the form of a pay rise or a better job, Didit Hari Purnomo left his job as a TVRI cameraman a few years back just to help disadvantaged women and children in the East Java capital of Surabaya.
Indonesians in Focus: Airin Rachmi Diany
Airin Rachmi Diany, 30, has got it all. She has a good education, a secure job, a rich husband and two lovely children. But instead of choosing to pretend that she does not see how the other half lives, she finds happiness in helping Banten province’s poorest people.
