Arafuru Sea Vulnerable to Illegal Fishing
By Barrie | No Comments » Large-scale illegal fishing by passing foreign trawlers is rampant in the Arafura Sea, including waters off Merauke and Mimika regencies, despite patrols, according to authorities. The 15-day Operation Gurita, conducted by the Indonesian Marine Security coordinating board, intercepted 33 foreign trawlers, seven of which were from China operating in the Arafura Sea without any sailing and fishing documents.
‘Grave’ of Illegal Logs Found: Riau, Sumatra
By Barrie | No Comments » Police are still investigating the discovery of around 1,300 cubic meters of buried illegal logs that were recently unearthed by flooding in Kampar regency, Riau. They said the logs had been confiscated and eyewitnesses would be summoned to identify the owner of the logs, which were believed to have been buried to avoid police raids.
Dutch MP’s Film Outrages Indonesians

Dozens of Indonesians have demonstrated outside the Dutch embassy in Jakarta over a Dutch MP’s film that has outraged many Muslims. Some protesters hurled eggs and plastic water bottles at the embassy as riot police formed a wall to keep them away. Geert Wilders, leader of the right-wing Freedom Party (PVV) in the Netherlands, released the 17-minute film Fitna (”Strife”) on the internet last week. Showing scenes of terrorist attacks, it claims the Koran inspires violence. Hundreds of Indonesian school students also demonstrated against the film in central Java on Sunday.
Corby Review Appeal Rejected
By Barrie | No Comments » Convicted Australian drug smuggler Schapelle Leigh Corby is considering various options following the rejection of her appeal by the country’s Supreme Court, says her lawyer. “She has yet to decide what measure she will take regarding the Supreme Court’s decision,” Erwin Siregar said on Saturday. The 30-year-old Corby was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Denpasar District Court in May 2005 for the illegal possession of 4.2 kilograms of marijuana.
