elan.jpg When Elan Wukak Victor, 63, was named as one of the winners of the 2007 Kalpataru Award earlier this month, many were left wondering why he received the country’s highest environmental prize. After all, the father of two is a teacher, and as such an education award would seem more fitting for him.

‘People’s Pharmacies’: Indonesia

The government has come closer to providing affordable drugs for the public by establishing the Apotek Rakyat (People’s Pharmacy) program to enable people to procure inexpensive over-the-counter and prescribed drugs. The People’s Pharmacy is based on a ministerial decree enacted in March 2007.

The Legend of ‘Lamafa’: East Nusa Tenggara

Lamafa, a local term for a whaler in Lamalera village, along with its whaling tradition, was already around hundreds of years ago, before Catholic missionaries entered East Nusa Tenggara in 1500s. To reach the village, visitors fly 30 minutes from Kupang, the capital city of East Nusa Tenggara, to Lewaleba regency on Lembata Island, and continue the trip by ship or car for another four hours.

Preparing “Visit Indonesia Year”

The government`s culture and tourism department is currently making preparations for the launching of a “Visit Indonesia Year” in the middle of 2007. “A `Visit Indonesai Year` (VIY) is now in the final phase of preparation. We will launch it in July or August,” Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik said.

Climate Change Affects Poorest

Farmers in East Nusa Tenggara have lost 25 to 40 percent of their income due to irregular rainfall, while fishermen in the Maluku islands have complained of poor catches in recent years as they lose their ability to predict sea climate and fish movements.

Lack of Funding Blamed for Tourism Problem

A lack of funding to promote tourism in Indonesia internationally is largely responsible for a steady decline in the number of foreign tourists visiting the country, an official from the Culture and Tourism Ministry said.

Food Crisis Hits East Nusa Tenggara

A serious food crisis has hit Timor Tengah Utara regency in East
Nusa Tenggara
, where up to 7,744 families in five districts are at risk of famine due to harvest failures. The food crisis has forced many residents to turn to the forest to find alternative food sources after pests and prolonged drought destroyed their harvest.

It always helps when you travel to Indonesia to know some of the festive days, those holidays that just might affect your days there. One of these is Nyepi in Bali when everything is shut down for the day and nobody, and I mean nobody, is allowed on the streets.
