In the eastern part of Surakarta regency, Central Java, is an eye-catching compound of large buildings on Jl. Ir. Sutami, the road connecting Surakarta with Surabaya, East Java; or to be exact, it stands next to Sebelas Maret University (UNS) and the Indonesian Fine Arts Institute-Surakarta (ISI Surakarta).

Ancient Theater Kept Alive: Jakarta, West Java

wayang.jpg The lights went out inside the Bharata Wayang Orang Theater in Senen, Central Jakarta. The dim sound of the traditional gamelan orchestra gained in intensity, silencing the chatter of the audience. The dark maroon curtain lifted to reveal performers in colorful traditional costumes. The show had begun.

Yet, little may be known about the surrounding areas that are no less interesting destinations and can be enjoyed while visiting Borobudur — the largest Buddhist temple in the world built around the 7th and 8th centuries, located some 60 kilometers north of Yogyakarta.

The homes of the Citorek people spread out at the foot of Mount Halimun. The mountain’s name, which means fog, is apt. The thick air hanging in the forests is a striking feature of the landscape. It takes five hours by car from Jakarta to reach the Citorek hamlets in Lebak regency, Banten. It is a bumpy ride along damaged road to get there. Water springs along the road have crumbled the asphalt, leaving only pebbles and potholes. The road, built only three years ago, opened the access to the area, enabling the Citorek to brush up with modern technologies such as television and radio.
