Corby Review Appeal Rejected

Convicted Australian drug smuggler Schapelle Leigh Corby is considering various options following the rejection of her appeal by the country’s Supreme Court, says her lawyer. “She has yet to decide what measure she will take regarding the Supreme Court’s decision,” Erwin Siregar said on Saturday. The 30-year-old Corby was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Denpasar District Court in May 2005 for the illegal possession of 4.2 kilograms of marijuana.

Police and Military Security for Christmas

The Police, with the back-up of the Indonesian Military, are gearing up for heightened security operations during Christmas
and New Year’s celebrations in West and Central Java, an official said. In West Java, 19,000 police officers will be deployed to safeguard the Christmas processions of 412 churches throughout the province.

Eco-tourism Expands in Bali

The eco-tourism industry is on the steady increase in Bali, with many living around or near beaches, hilly areas, paddy fields or forests conserving and managing their land for tourists, coordinator of the Bali Ecotourism Study Group, AA Gde Raka Dalem, says. Raka is working with a team from Udayana University, to collect data on eco-tourism in Bali. He said the growth was sparked by an aggressive movement to “get back to nature”, including how to behave in an environmentally friendly manner.

Tree Planting Campaign: Ubud, Bali

Garbage Pile-Up: Bali

Expatriates and locals concerned about the fast build-up of plastic waste in Bali launched a consumer-level waste reduction initiative this year. The six-month-old campaign — “Say No to Plastic” or “Bali Cantik Tanpa Plastic” — has seen retailers in Ubud start to offer affordable alternatives to plastic shopping bags while educating their customers about the plastic problem.
