Indonesia to Clear 50% of IMF Debt: Jakarta, Indonesia

Indonesia will repay 50 percent of its debt to the IMF in 2006, Bank Indonesia (BI) or central bank Governor Burhanuddin Abdullah said here on Monday.

Padang Students Brush Up on Koran: Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia

Forget about the standard academic proficiency indicators of math, science or reading comprehension in Padang, West Sumatra. Instead, it will be Koranic literacy which determines whether elementary schoolchildren can continue their education in the West Sumatra capital.

ID Cards and Religion: Indonesia

The idea of having to carry ID cards does not appeal to me. However, in Indonesia it is compulsory. During the Soeharto regime, if you were stopped by the police and couldn’t provide your ID Card, then you were in big trouble. One thing I disagree with the ID cards is having a person’s religion on it. But, there are no plans to drop this from the card.

Relief International (RI), a leading international, humanitarian aid agency, has responded to the deadly 6.3 magnitude Indonesian earthquake which struck the ancient city of Yogyakarta on the island of Java at 5:54 a.m. Saturday morning.

PT Angkasa Pura (AP) I, which is running the Adi Sutjipto airport in Yogyakarta is considering reopening the airport, but restricted to the airlifting of humanitarian assistance to places in Central Java province in the wake of the earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale which struck on Saturday morning.
